RFC Dhargal clinched the 3rd volleyball tournament organised by Kshatriya Sports Club, Colvale by overcoming the challenge of OM Sports Club with a 3-2 win in the finals on Saturday.
In all, 12 teams participated in the volleyball knock-out floodlit tournament held at Colvale. There were two groups of six teams each. Group A constituted RFC Dhargal, RBD Rockers, Aroba, Our Lady of Holy Cross, 7 Star Mandrem and Shining Star Nigal, while Group B comprised of Barajan Palyem, Om Sports Club, Alorna Gymkhana, Kshastriya Sports Club, Maheshwar Boys and Dadeshwar boys.
The final was keenly contested from the outset. Om Sports Club took the lead winning the first set 21-17. RFC staged a comeback in the next set to win it 23-21 and level the scores at 1-1. RFC won the next set as well at 21-16 to forge ahead at 2-1. In a do-or-die fourth set for Om Sports Club, the side fought hard to win it 21-17 and take the final to a decisive fifth set. The fifth set, played on 15 points, was fought tooth and nail to the very end until the experience and skill of RFC players, Ninad and Vijay saw off their stiff opposition to win the tournament.
While the winning team was awarded with a cash purse of Rs 8,000 and the championship trophy, the runners-up settled for a prize of Rs 4,000 and a trophy. There were also individuals prizes awarded: Best lifter (setter): Sahil Sawant, Best smasher: Ninad Salgaonkar, Best Libro (defender): Sadashiv Matkar.
Yoganand Gawas, former Sarpanch of Nadora, graced the closing function as the chief guest. Omkar Vaigankar (sports promoter and chairman of Goan Warriors FC) congratulated both the finalists and Kshatriya Sports Club for doing a fine job in organising the floodlit volleyball
tournament.
