Salgaocar FC overpowered Sporting Clube de Goa 3-1 to top the group in the GFA U-16 League, at Cansaulim Sports Complex on Thursday.
Both the teams adopted an aggressive approach and the Flaming Oranje put the rival defence under pressure but could not get past goalkeeper Vellyo Silva in the Greens' goal. In the fourth minute, defender Kyle D'Cruz sent in a long ball to Samward Pereira, who controlled the ball beautifully and finished in style to put Salgaocar in front. But Sporting did not let the goal get the better of them, striker Rohit Tutad levelling the terms with a strike in the 20th minute.
Crossing over, the match could have gone either way but Salgaocar goalkeeper Vellyo proved to be unbeatable. In the 64th minute, midfielder Aman Rajbhar put a lofted cross to Aaron Bareto, who blasted the ball past the Sporting goalkeeper to make it 2-1. Sevon Costa added to the Sporting pain with a thunderous strike from 50 yards out which rattled the inside of the crossbar and went in, making it a perfect win for the the Greens.
Salgaocar top the table with 21 points from seven games, while Sporting remain on 18 points from same number of matches.
