MARGAO
Perhaps the seniors at Salgaocar FC Should take a leaf out their juniors. While the seniors struggle to register a single win in the I-League, the junior team secured a 2-0 win over Royal Wahingdoh and qualified for the semi-finals of the Under 18 I-League at East Bengal grounds in Kolkata on Thursday. Liston Colaco and Stephen Satardekar were the scorers.
Salgaocar juniors started slow in the first half as they took on Wahingdoh. Neither was he able to make a convincing run to their opposition’s post as most of the game was played out in the middle of the field. Liston however was in fine form right from the start as he made plenty of runs down the left flank but lacked any support to come up with a finish. The uneventful first half ended goalless as the teams went in to reconsider their strategy.
As soon as the second half kicked off the difference was very much visible in the Greens play. Playing out a beautiful passing game and cutting in close on a few occasions to frustrate the Highlanders. Wahingdoh cracked under the mounting pressure when they conceded a free-kick in the 72nd minute just about 30 yards from their goal. This proved to be fatal as Liston who stepped up to took it curled the ball past their custodian on the right just kissing the post on its way in. The next goal was a result of another attempt by Liston as he received a pass from Daniel which he shot but hit the goalkeeper and found Stephen who had only to tap it in and did so without any delay. This saw the Greens sail into the semis where they will face the runners-up of Group A, Tata Football Academy.
