Saumyaa Raikar emerged champion at a chess tournament organised for academy students by Chess Learning Centre in association with Ponda Taluka Chess Association (PTCA) at Khadpabandh, Ponda.
Sarthak Naik and Aaradhya Naik finished second and third respectively, while Sarvambh Naik, Arnav Bhat, Alisha Kamat and Siddhanth Kamat secured the fourth to seventh positions.
Aarohi Singbal, Arnav More, Kartik Bhosale, Kavya Manerikar, Sanvi Chodankar and Mudra Lawande received consolation prizes.
The prizes were distributed by PTCA president Sagar Sakordekar, executive committee member Mahesh Khedekar and secretary Amogh Namshiker.
Speaking on the occasion, Sakordekar urged the young players to participate in standard-format rating tournaments. He also appreciated the efforts of parents in encouraging their children to take part in chess competitions.
