Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar has said the State government will create a special Sports Cell for special children and senior citizens in the forthcoming budget, to encourage special children and senior citizens to participate in sports activities.

He was speaking at Porvorim after felicitating the seven students of Sanjay School, who won medals at the 4th national level Judo Championship held at Lucknow.

Speaking further, Tawadkar said the State government created sports infrastructure worth Rs 400 crore during the Lusofonia Games and additional infrastructure will be created shortly by spending about Rs 200 crore for the Under-17 FIFA World Cup games to be held in Goa.

“It requires extra efforts to train the special children. The management of the Sanjay School and the coaches deserves compliments for training and making these students competent enough to win medals at the national level,” said Tawadkar.

Aldona MLA Glen Ticlo congratulated the students for winning medals at the national level and said it is not so easy to win medals at the nationals. “It requires great efforts, both on the part of participants and coaches, to achieve this feat,” he said.

Goa Blind and Para Judo Association secretary Sudesh Tivrekar also spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, Sanjay School for Special Education chairman Guruprasad Pawasker welcomed the gathering.

Students Aslam Ganjanawar (gold), Romaldo D’Souza (silver), Nandan Naik, Alisha Dabolker, Aquif Sheikh, Tasmaya Sheikh and Jamaluddhn Ali (all bronze) were felicitated. Scarlet Gonsalves compered.
