Sportsweek, Vijaya CA advance with facile wins

Local outfit Sportsweek CC got off to a winning start with a 136-run victory over Nasik CA in the 2nd Late Babu Naik All India Under 16 cricket tournament at SAG Margao on Friday. In another match, Vijaya CA (Belgaum) scored a facil 78-run win over Jaipur CA at Agonda grounds.

At SAG grounds, winning the toss and electing to bat, Sportsweek team were in trouble at 65 for 3 with left-arm seamer Prachit Devkar (4 for 45) pitching the right length and swinging it into the batsmen. But skipper Sanath Prabhudesai (65) and Pushpadeep Kossambe (51) played steadily and shared a 127-run 4th wicket partnership. Sanath Nevgi (40), Dewan Chittam (37) and Lenka (23) chipped in to prop up the score to 255 in 45 overs losing 8 wickets. Aditya Pande (2-50), Ravindra Maccha and Sahil Parekh (1 each) were among the wickets for NCA.

Left handed diminutive opener Shervin Kiswa (44) was the only batsman to counter the disciplined bowling by Sportsweek bowlers. Spinners Tusar Patel (3 for 31), Arya Rajput (2 for 16) and Saiesh Satardekar (1 for 18) were the wreckers while Omprakash Lenka picked up 2 wickets. Sportsweek play Jaipur CA at Agonda in their next match.

At Agonda grounds, the toss was won by Vijaya CA who elected to bat. A superb spell by Nitin Barala (6 for 18) could not prevent the Belgaum side to post a formidable 173 all out in 31 overs. Skipper Mayankraj (55) and Steven Byali (50) batted well to take the total to 156 for 2 but then Nitin skittled them for 172.

Chasing 173 to win, the Jaipur outfit could not handle the tight bowling of Belgaum side and folded up for 95 . The wickets fell at regular intervals with Mayankraj (2 for 16), Sandesh Puri (3 for 17) and Keertan, Manikant snapping two each. Vijaya will play Lucknow at Margao.

AFP New Delhi England have been fined for a slow over rate during the second one-day international against India in Cuttack, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Friday. Match referee Andy Pycroft imposed the fine after Eoin Morgan's side was ruled to be one over short of its target when time allowances were taken into consideration.
