Namresh Kundikar's second half strike enabled St Savio Sports Club,Calangute overcome Goa Velha Sports Club 1-0 to advance into the quarter-finals of McDowell's N0 1 Yaari Premier Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Agasaim Youth Club at Agasaim grounds, on Wednesday.There was no score at half time.
The match started with both the sides displaying entertaining soccer and had equal number of scoring chances but their forwards misfired from hand shaking distance.Midway in the opening session, St Savio Sports Club spearheaded by Vjay Parsenkar, and Ashley Lobo muffed two gilt-edged chances.
St Savio Sports Club nearly broke the deadlock but Goa Velha goalkeeper Joseph Rodrigues came to his side's rescue by thwarting rival striker Vijay Parsenkar from scoring.
At the other hand, Goa Velha did not lag behind as their forwards and midfeilders worked in tandeem to put the rival defence in dissaray. Goa Velha nearly scored but St Savio goalkeeper Andrew Fernandes parried away rival striker Anthony Fernandes' rasping shot. With time runing out, St Savio, striker Vijay Parsenkar collected the ball from the flank and stormed into the rival penalty box all of his own, but his marvellous effort was cleared by Goa Velha goalkeeper.
The teams went into the break with the deadalock prevailing. Post resumption, both the teams conninued in the same vein. However,St Savio enjoyed the lion's share of possesion and exchanges.
There were few thirlls and the play was restricted to midfeld. St Savio finaly drew first blood through Namresh Kundaikar who pulled off a sublime header off a well measured free-kick from Raju in the 65th minute. Stung by that setback, Goa Velha tried their best to neutralize the lead but suffered further after veteran Vishant Pednekar's injury prevented them from levelling the score.
