St. Sebastiao YC, Murida-Fatorda edged past Guardian Angel Sports Club, Curchorem 3-2 via tie-breakers in the finals to be crowned champions of the 20th Velim Panchayat Cup Football Tournament, organised by the Sports and Welfare Club of Zaino, Velim, at the Velim Church ground, recently.
Both teams adopted a cautious approach, keeping much of the action confined to the midfield. As the game progressed, Guardian Angel raised the tempo with strong attempts from Victorino and Reagan, but Fatorda goalkeeper Royston Colaco made timely saves to deny them.
At the other end, Guardian Angel keeper Oswin prevented Ainsley from scoring in the dying minutes, ensuring the match remained 0–0 at the final whistle.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Nicolau Borges, Samson Dias, and Edison Dias converted for St. Sebastiao YC, while Sheldon Fernandes and Ivo Costa found the net for Guardian Angel SC.
Earlier, in the exhibition match between Velim Eves and Agonda Eves, the Agonda side secured a convincing 3–0 victory.
The prizes were distributed by Chief Guest Eng. Cruz Silva (MLA, Velim Constituency), Guest of Honour Joe Dias (VJT Arts, Ex-ZP Chinchinim), Fr. Santo Antonio Pereira (Parish Priest, Velim Church), Veena Cardozo (VP Sarpanch), Anthony Rebello (Dy. Sarpanch), members of VP Velim, Constancio Rodrigues, Melvin D’Costa, Andrew Ferrao, Anthony Fernandes (GFA Executive Member), Executive Committee Members of SWC Zaino and other dignitaries.
Goa Velha SC was awarded the Best Fighting Spirit Team of the tournament.
Vermon Fernandes, Team Manager of SWC Zaino, was felicitated for his dedicated service to the team.
