Krishna Constructions Sunday Champs will clash with Nityanand Sports Club in the finals of inaugural Geno Prudent T20 Cup at Goa Cricket Association academy ground, Porvorim on Sunday
at 1.30 pm.
Sunday Champs scored a four-wicket victory over Dempo Juniors in a closely-contested second semi-finals after Nityanand SC had beaten Ghumteshwar-Margao by seven wickets in the first semi-finals on Friday. The finals will be telecast live on Prudent Media TV channel.
Dempo Juniors won the t
oss and batted first. However, their start was plagued by three quick wickets in the form of Bharat Arkas (10), Keenan Vaz (0) and Rajat Shet (12). Captain Saurabh Bandekar scored 14 runs, before he became the fourth wicket to fall at the total of 56 runs in the 11th over. The major contribution with the bat, came from Darshan Misal, who timed his knock to perfection as he finished the inning with a flourish.
The left-arm spinner and a talented batsman, who captained Goa Ranji Trophy team in the absence of injured Sagun Kamat towards the end of the four-dayers campaign, remained unbeaten on 64 runs off 41 balls. The 25-year-old left-handed batsman slammed two sixers and five boundaries to bring some respectability to Dempo Juniors scorecard with the team total of 143/5.
Sufiyan Alam supported him well with 21 runs, with the fifth-wicket partnership realising 38 runs. Darshan then got support of Malik Shirur (9 not out) for an unfinished 49-run stand for the sixth wicket. For Sunday Champs, Nikesh Panjikar picked up two wickets, while off-spinner Amogh Desai bowled a tight line-and-length to strangle the rival batsmen in his four overs, giving away just 16 runs.
In reply, Sunday Champs cruised to 91 runs without loss in 12.4 overs when hard-hitting opener Ishan Gadekar was caught in the deep off the bowling of Saurabh Bandekar for 43-ball 50 runs, that included three sixers and two boundaries. Thereafter, wickets fell at regular intervals with Dempo Juniors coming back in the reckoning.
However, Amogh came good with the bat as well, scoring 54 off 50 balls, which were studded with three sixers and two boundaries. Once Amogh departed in the form of sixth wicket at the team total of 135, Sunday champs required nine runs in the final over off the bowling of Abuhurera Bhadgaonkar. Shubham Desai though looked in control from the first ball, as he blasted boundaries of three consecutive deliveries, to take his team to a deserved victory and into the big finals. For Dempo, captain Saurabh Bandekar claimed three wickets. Amogh was named man-of-the match and was presented the award by Krishna Prasad, Manager, GWave.
Earlier in the first semi-finals, Sumiran Amonkar scored an unbeaten half-century to guide Nityanand Sports Club of Ponda, to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Ghumteshwar-Margao, with 2.2 overs to spare. Chasing 134 runs to win, Nityanand SC lost three wickets - Amar Arkas (7), Pushpashil Desai (0) and Achit Shigwan (19) - before Sumiran (83 runs off 56 balls, 12 boundaries) capitalised on two lives, and in company of Mahesh Rao (20 not out), steered his team to victory with an unfinished fourth-wicket stand of 81 runs.
Ghumteshwar, being put into bat, had only managed 133/8 with captain Samar Dubashi contributing 31 runs, while Pritesh Naik (28) and Amey Dhamsekar (21) were the other notable run-getters. For Nityanand, captain Sagar Gosavi was once again the main wicket-taker with excellent figures of four overs 19 runs and three wickets. Achit took two wickets. Sumiran Amonkar was named man of the match with the award being presented by Paresh Raikar, of Radhatma Traders, Mapusa.
