United Club of Verna lifted the Lourdes Festival Soccer Title after defeating Parish Youth Nuvem 1-0 in a thrilling final of the All Goa Inter-Village Football Tournament, held in memory of the late Nicholas Via, at the Utorda ground.
The final match between Parish Youth Nuvem and United Club of Verna kept spectators on the edge of their seats, with both teams pushing forward but failing to break the deadlock. The first half ended goalless, with both teams failing to capitalize on their chances.
Nuvem had an early chance in the 18th minute, with Ivo Colasco missing a golden opportunity from close range. Verna’s defense, however, stood strong, with a brilliant goal-line clearance by a Nuvem defender using his head.
In the second half, Verna’s persistence paid off in the 50th minute when Desmond Pereira scored the only goal of the match, securing the win and the trophy for United Club of Verna.
The event was welcomed by the President of United Club of Utorda, with Secretary Tony LC Fernandes delivering the vote of thanks. Shawn Pereira compered the proceedings.
The prizes were presented by the chief guest, Savio Madeira, in the presence of guest of honor Rosita Rodrigues, Fr. Arvino Fernandes, who presided over the event, and Andrew Ferrao, GFA executive member. The ceremony was coordinated by Sports Secretaries Pascoal Vaz and Tony Vincent Fernandes. Savio Madeira, while speaking at the occasion, emphasized the importance of punctuality and discipline for football in Goa to regain its lost glory.
