Varca Sports Club blanked St Anthony’s Sports Club, Colva 2-0 to win the Cana Benaulim Panchayat Cup football tournament organised by St Sebastian Union Club, Benaulim at St John the Baptist ground, Dando Benaulim on Sunday.
Both the teams adopted an attacking approach and Varca had the first clear chance to break the deadlock but striker Jhonus D’Costa muffed a gilt edged chance in the 8th minute. At the other end, Maxon Fernandes’s snap shot missed the mark by a few inches in the 12th minute.
Post resumption, the teams showed urgency and had chances to break the deadlock. St Anthony’s Colva had a chance but striker Baptist Fernandes’ stiff shot was well blocked by Varca goalkeeper Mohammed Shaikh. Varca finally surged ahead in the 46th minute when Jhonus D’Costa headed home off a well measured floater from
Nash Pereira.
Spurred by the success, Varca Sports Club upped the ante and Nash Pereira sealed the rivals’ fate with a scorcher in the 52nd minute. Down 0-2, the Colva team pressed hard for goals and were unlucky when Fanslam Correia’s shot hit the post and Varca goalkeeper Mohymmmed Shaikh then palmed away a Francis Pauskar snap shot.
Varca Sports Club were richer by Rs 40,000 while St Anthony’s Sports Club had to settle for Rs 30,000.
