A fine brace by Velanie Fernandes helped FC Goa drub United Club of Telaulim (UCT) 3-0 in the opening match of the 5th GFA Vedanta Women League at Rosary Ground, Navelim on Wednesday. There was no score at the break.
FC Goa dominated the possession in the first half but could not score due to inept shooting by the Gaurs forwards. At the other end, new entrants UCT had few scoring chances but their forwards misfired from close range.
The second half saw FC Goa in total control and pushed their opponents on the back foot. In the 52nd minute, Vailanka D’Souza opened the floodgates when she punted the ball to the far corner of the net. Spurred by the lead FC Goa upped the ante and troubled the rival defence with well-orchestrated raids. Velanie Fernandes doubled the lead in the 63rd minute while in the 79th minute, she again struck with a rasping shot to make it 3-0. UCT tried their best but failed to get past the rival defenders.
Velanie Fernandes was adjudged the outstanding player and received the awards at the hands of Antonio Pango, vice president of Goa Football Association.

MARGAO: Reigning champions Sirvodem PSA Dubai Sports Club began their title defence in a cool manner walloping Compassion FC 10-0 at Dramapur Ground on Wednesday. Sirvodem PSA Dubai Sports Club led 7-0 at half time.
The start of the first half completely belonged to Sirvodem. The highlight of the day was a seven-goal blitz by Titli Sarkar, a brace by Vinoshka Fernandes while Ravina added a goal to the final tally. The final whistle came in as a big relief to the Compassion team.
