A splendid hat-trick by Victorino Fernandes enabled Sporting Clube de Goa register a resounding 4-0 win over Panjim Footballers in the ninth found match of the Goa Professional League, organised by GFA, at Duler stadium, here on Thursday.
In their previous fixture, Panjim Footballers had drawn against FC Bardez, while Sporting Clube had drubbed Vasco SC by a 5-1 margin. After this result, Sporting climbs to second position with 19 points from nine matches, while Panjim Footballers are tenth with 4 points from seven matches.
Though Panjim lads had better of the exchanges in the first 30 minutes of the match, Sporting Clube scored twice in the 19th and 28th minutes through Victorino and Cajetan Fernandes. In the 13th minute, Daryl Costa snatched the ball from defender Suresh Thapa but fumbled while taking a crack at the goal to find Sporting’s Clemente Joseph clear the ball for a corner.
In the 19th minute, a high ball clearance from a Panjim defender was not cleanly collected by keeper Sherwin Da Cunha and the ball travelled to Victorino, who finished with a stiff grounder, 1-0. It did not take long for the Flaming Oranje to double their lead when in the 28th minute, Clive Miranda sent a long throw-in which was controlled and slammed into the goal by Cajetan, 2-0. In the added-on time of the first half, Egyptian recruit Fady Riad set up Victorino inside the penalty box to find the latter place the ball past the keeper into the goal 3-0.
On crossing over, once again Panjim Footballers started well and came twice close to reducing the margin. In the 53rd minute, Valmiky Miranda sent a long floater to Daryl Costa on the right flank, where the latter flashed a cross at the goal after entering the 18-yard box. The ball however was easily collected by keeper Melroy.
Ten minutes later, a dangerous cross from the left flank by Alston Camotio was connected well by Cyril Dias, forcing an excellent save by the keeper. While the capital side failed to score at the other end, the Flaming Oranje netted their fourth goal when Victorino collected a through pass from Cajetan and placed the ball into the goal to complete his hat-trick, 4-0. In the 80th minute, Alesh Sawant found Victorino inside the penalty box but the latter’s strike rebounded off the crossbar and the ball travelled to Marcus, who failed to guide the ball into the goal.
