St Joseph Convent High School, Aquem, edged past Saviour of the World High School, Loutolim, 2-1 in the Salcete taluka Under-14 Subroto Mukherjee inter-school football tournament organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs at Nehru stadium, Fatorda on Wednesday.
Both teams started the game in an attacking fashion. However, Saviour of the World took the control of the proceedings when Melroy Fernandes and Shawn Fernandes combined well before the former was tackled by a rival defender in the 8th minute.
At the other end, St Joseph Convent struck the rhythm and called the shots with Maven Gomes coming close to scoring only to see his volley brilliantly saved by rival goalkeeper Aniston D’Silva. Earlier, Wedly Baretto pumped in two quick goals (3rd and 16th minute) to register his brace. Stung by the setback, Saviour of the World regrouped quickly and Sadamshiv Gavadikar scored the consolation goal for his team. The second half continued in the same vein with St Joseph Convent enjoying the lion’s share of exchanges. However, they failed to increase their tally due to inept shooting by their forwards.
Elsewhere, Perpetual Succour Convent High School, Navelim, crushed Fr Agnel Multipurpose HS,Verna, 4-1. Delmon Rebello, Isain Noronha, Naythan Coutinho and Presley Gomes were the goal-getters for Perpetual. Alee Gracias reduced the margin for Fr Agnel. Our Lady of Snows High School-Raia beat Rosary High School, Navelim, 3-1. Naveen Gautami netted a brace, while Aliston Cardozo was the other scorer for the winners while Ameen Attair scored the consolation goal for Rosary. In another match, Bethany Convent High School-Sao Jose de Areal defeated Regina Martyrum High School-Assolna 4-3 via the tie-breaker.
