Curtorim Gymkhana squandered chances aplenty but still managed to record a 3-2 win over Goa Velha Sports Club in the Geno GFA First Division League at SAG Artificial Turf, Fatorda on Tuesday. Curtorim Gymkhana led 2-1 at half time.
Curtorim Gymkhana dominated the game, waltzing into the rival’s area at will. Curtorim Gymkhana’s finishing however left a lot to the desired. Goa Velha’s breakthrough came in the 39th minute when midfielder Francis Fernandes utilised a rival’s defensive error and drew out Curtorim Gymkhana goalkeeper Shubham Naik to place the ball to the far corner of the net.
Curtorim Gymkhana regrouped quickly and their midfielders Suraj Naik, Jaison Martins worked in tandem to put the rivals under pressure. Persistent forays paid the dividends in the 41st minute when Suraj Naik and Jaison Martins combined well as the latter fed Suraj, whose snap shot beat Goa Velha goalkeeper Akshat Hadonkar. The equalizer spurred Curtorim Gymkhana and in the 43rd minute, Milagres Fernandes beat the rival goalkeeper with a neat finish to regained
the lead.
In the second session, almost four chances -- most of them from point blank range -- were wasted as Roque Borges, Jameson Noronha, Suraj Naik and Milagres Fernandes all missed sitters. Curtorim Gymkhana had a chance to increase their tally but striker Milagres Fernandes spurned the easiest of chances with only the rival goalkeeper
to beat.
Goa Velha fetched the equaliser in the 78th minute when substitute Ojoy Araujo cancelled the lead thanks to the rival goalkeeper’s lapses. With time running out, midfielder Jameson Noronha chested the ball down and beat the rival goalkeeper with a neat finish, off a Cliff Baretto assist to give his team three points in the
85th minute.
In another game played at Sirsaim ground, Dempo SC Juniors had a narrow 1-0 win over AA de Moira. Nikil Gurung scored the all important goal for the Golden Eagles in the 64th minute. Dempo’s Sachin Gawas was named as the Man of the match.
