A triple strike by Welson Fernandes helped Curtorim Gymkhana cruise past Carmona SC to enter the quarter-finals of the 33rd Strikers Trophy Football Tournament organised by Young Strikers Benaulim at St John Baptist Ground, Dando, Benaulim.
Curtorim made a blistering start but young Carmona goalkeeper Edwil Afonso made two fantastic saves in the first quarter, denying Nelson Fernandes and Mackwill Fernandes. Curtorim finally broke the deadlock in the 27th minute when striker Welson Fernandes finished a move initiated by Curtorim medio Abel Noronha with a right-footed drive.
Carmona fought back and restored parity five minutes later when Curtorim Goalkeeper Cristo Hilario committed an error by allowing the ball to slip out of his hands, following a low freekick by Cristben Estaibeiro. The joy was however short-lived for Carmona as Welson Fernandes restored Curtorim’s lead with a fierce volley from a pass by winger Veron Fernandes from the right.
After the change of ends, Curtorim dominated the proceedings and striker Welson Fernandes completed his hat-trick in the 62nd minute with a deft placement, off a pass by Mackwill Fernandes.
Earlier in the inaugural ceremony, the winners and runners-up trophies were unveiled by Benaulim Sarpanch Diella Pereira and Colva Sarpanch Anthony Leo Fernandes, in the presence of Xavier Pereira, Panch and club chairman Jaju Fernandes, and Filip
Fernandes.
