In order to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Western Naval Command, a sailing expedition onboard ‘INSV Bulbul,’ an LC 40 Class sailboat, is being undertaken between September 13 to October 13.
The expedition would cover the states on the western seaboard namely Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. During the expedition, ‘Bulbul’ would make stops at the ports of Porbandar, Mumbai, Goa and New Mangalore.
The sailing vessel will be arriving at Goa AM on Thursday and will be received by Naval Officer-in-Charge Goa. The sailing leg from Goa to New Mangalore would be flagged off on October 7 by Rear Admiral, Philipose G Pynumootil, Flag Officer Goa Naval Area.
With a view to popularise ocean sailing amongst young officers of the Western Naval Command, four officers would be provided the opportunity to participate in each of the legs of this expedition. The skipper of the yacht, Capt Vipul Meherishi is an acclaimed yachtsman of international repute and has fetched numerous medals for India in international yachting events.
Whilst at sea the crew would be spending 3 to 4 days approximately per leg. They would be exposed to the vagaries of nature and would require to sail using only the winds for propulsion. Due to the limited space onboard, the crew would also be surviving on dry provisions and a limited quantity of fresh water. The non-availability of bare necessities like electricity, fresh water for taking bath or fresh provisions for meals would make the voyage challenging for the crew.
Further, the chances of encountering rains or thundershowers at sea would also add to the complexity of surviving at sea.
