Young Challengers, Benaulim shunted out Livrament Boys, Arlem 6-5 via the sudden death to emerge champions of Bab Bakery Cup 8-a-side football tournament in memory of Anthony Fernandes organised by Bab Bakery Boys at Ximu Moll Ground, Benaulim on Wednesday. Both the teams tied 2-2 during the normal time.
The teams started the game on attacking mode and launched barrage of attacks but goals eluded. In the second half Joel Dias broke the deadlock with a snapshot in the 30th minute for Young Challengers. However, their joy short-lived and in 34th minute Livrament Boys’ Danny Fernandes cancelled the lead. Six minutes later Nicolau regained the lead for Young Challengers. With the match drifting towards Young Challengers, Livrament Boys struck the equaliser through Danny Fernandes.
The tiebreaker too were levelled. In the sudden death Young Challengers Benaulim proved to be better shooters.
Young Challengers, Benaulim were richer by Rs 30,000 while Livrament Boys had to settle for Rs 20,000.
Individual prizes were awarded - Best player of the tournament - Aston Rodrigues (Young Challengers), First goal of the tournament - Richard (Bab Bakery), Best defender of final - Mario Mascarenhas (Livrament Boys), Best midfielder of final - Niclau Rodrigues (Young Challengers), Best disciplined team - Ave Maria Athelitic and Walkers.
Fr Milagres Dias, assistant parish priest of Our Lady of Livrament Church, Benaulim was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Mathew D’Costa, coach of Churchill Brothers, Aluxio Fernandes, football promoter of Salcete, Manoj Kesarkar, Caitainho Fernandes, proprietor of Bab Bakery, Benaulim and other dignitaries.
