Corjem Sports Club edged out Cumborda Sports Club 6-5 via the tie-breaker in a thrilling encounter to reach the quarter-finals of the 9-a-side football tournament, organised by Sporting Club Virabhat, at St Alex Church ground, Curtorim.
Cumborda started strong with Veron opening the scoring in the sixth minute. However, Corjem responded through Rhay in the 18th minute bringing the game level at halftime.
The second half saw another goal from Cumborda's Myrick with a powerful header in the 35th minute. But Corjem's Rhay struck again just two minutes later to equalise once more. The score remained at 2-2 after regulation time, forcing the game into a penalty shoot-out.
Corjem held their nerve in the shoot-out converting all four penalties taken by Milagres, Glen, Lionel, and Ashford. Cumborda managed to score three penalties through Myrick, Sam, and Veron, but it wasn't enough.
The hero for Corjem was undoubtedly their goalkeeper Rhay Dias after coming up with three crucial saves in the penalty shootout, earning him the Man of the Match award presented by Baptist Fernandes.
