Cuncolim Union secured their spot in the semifinals of the 1st VJT Cup 2023 with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Canacona Sports & Cultural Club at Church ground, Cuncolim on Friday.
Cuncolim took the lead in the 20th minute when Ashtrofio Pinto slotted home a cross from the right wing. The second half saw more action and drama as both teams went for the kill. Canacona equalized in the 40th minute when Alvito Miranda unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box that beat the Cuncolim keeper.
Cuncolim regained their lead in the 54th minute when Daulat Dessai headed in a corner kick from the left. Cuncolim Union will now face CRC Chinchinim in the first semifinal on Saturday. Velvino Fernandes of Canacona was named Man of the Match and received a special prize from Fr Victor and Fr Christopher, Our Lady of Hope Church Chinchinim.
SJD Areal blank Fr Agnelo 4-0
Sao Jose de Areal SC beat Fr Agnelo Youth Sports Club 4-0 to enter the quarterfinals of the 50th Custodio Memorial inter-village football tournament organized by Raia Sporting Club at Raia Panchayat ground on Friday.
Aryan Carvalho gave the lead to SJD Areal in the sixth minute. Bersal Viegas and Myron Silva of Areal missed easy scoring chances in the first session. In the 47th minute, Marcus Mascarenhas doubled the lead for Areal. Marcus and Rayman Fernandes made the issue safer for Areal, scoring the third and fourth goals respectively.
Marcus Mascarenhas of Sao Jose de Areal was named the Man of the Match and received the award at the hands of Luis Quadros, ex-Sarpanch of VP Raia.
Nuvem SC advance to last-eight
Nuvem Sports Club defeated CAC Sports & Social Club 5-4 via the tiebreaker to enter the semifinals of the St Anthony’s Festival inter-village football tournament at Moll ground, Assolda.
The teams were tied goalless at the end of regulation time. In the tiebreaker, Joywin Costa, Royan Alvares, Meslein Barreto, Richard Colaco and Alloid Colaco netted for Nuvem SC while Reagan Soares, Domnic Soares, Kevin Pereira and Melvin scored for CAC.
YHAI Margao unit elects new committee
The annual general meeting cum triennial election of the Margao Unit of the Youth Hostels Association of India was held recently. The following members got elected unopposed for a 3-year term: President - Digamber V Kamat, Vice-president - Pandurang R Naik, Ashwath Majalikar, Chairman - Filomeno Costa, Treasurer - Jyoti Kamat M; Executive Members - Dipak Desai, Santosh Mapsekar, Vishwas Tari, Francisco Pereira, Kalidas Naik, Amir Naik, Vikas Raikar, Gautami Asolkar, Harsha Pednekar, Rashmi R Shet, Jaymini P Naik. Laxmidas Mangeshker and Jaysree Sasikumar have been appointed as General Secretary and Organising Secretary respectively.
