Curtorim Gymkhana emerged as champions in the 50th Custodio Memorial Football Tournament, organized by Raia Sporting Club at the Raia Panchayat ground on Saturday. They defeated Dramapur Sports Club 3-1 in an exciting match that kept the festive crowds on their toes. The teams were tied at 1-1 at halftime.
During the first half, Jovel Martins of Curtorim Gymkhana and Leslie Costa of Dramapur SC missed easy scoring chances. Afileo Fernandes of Curtorim Gymkhana opened the scoring in the 30th minute, but six minutes later, Franky Oliveira of Dramapur SC equalized through a spot kick.
In the second half, substitute Joy Hilario scored the all-important goal for Curtorim Gymkhana in the 56th minute, and James Fernandes made it even safer by scoring the third goal in the 67th minute.
Curtorim Gymkhana earned a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000 and a trophy while Dramapur SC received a cash prize of Rs 70,000 and a trophy.
Individual prizes: First goal of the final and Highest scorer of the tournament “ Afileo Fernandes (Curtorim Gymkhana), Best goalkeeper of the final “ Sunny Fernandes (Dramapur SC), Best defender of the final “ Mario Mascarenhas (Curtorim Gymkhana), Best midfielder of the final- Hayden Cardozo (Dramapur SC), Best forward of the final- Denil Rebello (Dramapur SC), Man of the final- James Fernandes (Curtorim Gymkhana). Best disciplined team - Peddem Bomm SC.
Francisco Sardinha, the MP of South Goa, was the chief guest and presented the prizes in the presence of Eduardo Faleiro, the ex-Union Minister for State, GPCC President Amit Patkar, and Parish Priest of OL of Snow's Church Raia Fr Januario D'Costa, and other dignitaries.
