Goan chess players Diya Sawal, Ethan Vaz and Reuben Colaco won medals at the National School Chess Championships 2022, at Bhubaneshwar, Odisha.
Diya (Class IV, Manovikas English Medium School, Margao) scored 9 points to win gold in Under-9 Girls category. Ethan (Class VI, The King's School, Sao Jose de Areal) scored 7 points and won a silver in Under-11 Open category. Reuben Colaco (Class X, Loyola High School, Margao) scored 7 points to claim a bronze in Under-15 Open category.
meanwhile, Valanka Fernandes (Class VIII, Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1 School, Vasco) scored 6 points to finish in the 11th place in Under-13 Girls category, securing a spot in the Top 12 prize list. Rishit Gawas (Class III, Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1 School) scored 5.5 points in Under-7 Open category, while Edrick Vaz (Class VIII, The King's School) scored 5 points in Under-13 Open category, and Rohit Gawas (Class IX, Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1 School) scored 4 points in Under-15 Open category.
The championships were organised on behalf of the All India Chess Federation (AICF) by All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA) at KIIT University, Bhubaneshwar. The Goan delegation was officially recommended by Goa Chess Ad-hoc Committee for the Nationals and comprised of the seven players (5 in Open, and 2 in Girls).
By virtue of their respective podium finishes at the National School Chess Championships, Diya, Ethan and Reuben have been officially selected to represent India at the Asian and World School Chess Championships to be held later this year.
