Goa’s promising young boxer, Laxmi Lamani, has been selected to represent India at the upcoming ASBC Asian Junior & School boys Schoolgirls Boxing Championships.
This significant event scheduled to take place in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, from August 27 to September 10, 2024, has Laxmi part of a strong 30-member Indian team, which includes 15 boys and 15 girls, who will compete against some of the best young boxers from across Asia.
Laxmi’s selection for this prestigious tournament follows her outstanding performance at the 3rd Sub Junior Boys and Girls National Boxing Championship, where she secured a gold medal. In the final bout, she displayed exceptional skill and strategy, defeating Chandigarh’s Niti with a unanimous decision. Her success in the national championship led to her recruitment by the Army Sports Institute, where she has continued to develop her talent. Now, Laxmi will take on top boxers from across Asia in this important continental tournament.
Expressing her excitement, Laxmi Lamani said, “Representing my country at the ASBC Championships is a dream come true. I have worked hard to reach this level, and I am proud to have this opportunity. My focus now is to give my best and make India proud.”
Francis Viegas, President of the Goa Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), expressed his pride in Laxmi’s achievements. “It is a proud moment for Goa and for India that a boxer from our state will be competing in such a prestigious continental tournament. Laxmi’s journey from winning gold at the National Boxing Championship to being recruited by the Army Sports Institute is a testament to her dedication and talent. We have high hopes for her performance in Al Ain.”
Previously a student of L D Samant Memorial High School in Porvorim, she was training under the guidance of internationally qualified and one of Goa’s best performing coaches Chitambaram Naik at Salvador Do Mundo since 2022, until she was selected by the Army Sports Institute in April this year.
