Head coach Joshuah Vaz is leading India’s Futsal Tigresses with a clear mission: build a confident, skilled, and competitive side for the SAFF Women’s Futsal Championship 2026, scheduled from January 13 to 25 in Nonthaburi, Thailand.
Vaz has guided the 14-player squad through an intense month-long training camp in Bengaluru, focusing on technical skills, tactical awareness, and mental preparedness. The team, averaging just 20.5 years, will face Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka in a single round-robin tournament where the top team will be crowned champions.
Speaking about the preparation, Vaz highlighted the benefits of futsal in developing footballing skills. “The smaller pitch keeps players under constant pressure, requiring sharper first touches, quick decision-making, and continuous movement to create passing options,” he said. “Goalkeepers have very little time on the ball, so teamwork is essential, and every player gets more touches and more shots on goal, which improves overall gameplay.”
Vaz also praised the attitude and hunger of the squad. “These girls are motivated, disciplined, and eager to improve. With the right guidance, they can make a strong mark in the tournament,” he added. Seven players in the team bring prior experience from the AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup 2025 Qualifiers, providing a solid foundation for the younger members to learn from.
The Tigresses’ training under Vaz has emphasized both skill and mindset, ensuring the team is ready to face the challenges of international competition. “Our aim is not just participation; we want to leave a statement in every match,” Vaz said.
