Norbert Moraes, a revered figure in Goa football was laid to rest at St Anthony’s Church cemetery in Veroda, Cuncolim, on Thursday.
Beyond his professional life, Moraes was an ardent football enthusiast and a beloved Konkani commentator. He formed a dynamic commentary duo with Jeremias Benaum, while Lume Pereira provided English commentary. Together, they were the voices of the Bandodkar Trophy, a tournament that captivated audiences in Vasco and Margao.
A former director of the government's accounts department, Moraes was a fount of knowledge in his field and was often consulted by officials.
"Moraes’ passing has left a void in the hearts of football fans and the community at large," said Anthony Pango, Sr. Vice President of the Goa Football Association, extended heartfelt condolences, acknowledging Moraes' invaluable contributions to Goan football.
Former President of the Goa Football Association Elvis Gomes described Moraes as his "Ganv Bhav" and a respected administrator. He emphasized that Moraes' commentary brought football matches to life for listeners, painting vivid pictures with his words. Gomes also highlighted Moraes’ exceptional knowledge of accounts.
Francis D’Souza, a former international footballer and national referee, praised Moraes' passion for football, which was evident in his commentary.
