Goa’s Shrisha Jampula created history at the 5th Elite Women's National Boxing Championship in Hisar, Haryana by booking a semifinals berth to assure herself a bronze in the light middleweight (66-70kg) category on Monday.
The Goan pugilist defeated Shivani Bharti from Bihar by split decision (3:2) in the last-eight clash to set up a semifinals encounter against Arundhati Choudhary, an experienced international boxer from Rajasthan. Shrisha outclassed her opponent in the first two bouts (won by RSC) to book her place in the last-four clash of the Championship slated for Tuesday.
“Today's fight was a close one, but I'm all set to bring home the gold,” Shrisha said.
Goa Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) secretary Danuska da Gama said she is hopeful that the boxer will end Goa’s 18-year wait for a senior women’s national medal.
“We are very happy for Shrisha and we hope she can change the medal colour for us. This medal at a senior women’s national is after a gap of 18 years; the last bronze medal was won by Vidya Bandekar from Goa Police in 2003. This only shows that Shrisha has trained her mind really well and we hope that she wins the semifinal bout and moves to the finals,” she says.
GABA will disburse Rs 50,000; Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000, respectively, for gold, silver and bronze medalists at the nationals of which 30 per cent is to be divided between the basic coach and the coaches that take the team to the nationals.
The gold and silver medallists will earn themselves a place in the national coaching camp. The remaining two names for the camp in each category will be selected on the basis of performances in the selection trials, which will take place right after the nationals.
