Navelim Villagers Union booked their place in the quarterfinals of the 19th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup, organized by Guirdolim Club, with a narrow 1“0 victory over Dicarpale Sports Club at the Chandor Church Sports Complex.
The match began on a cautious note, with play largely restricted to the midfield and neither side managing to take clear control. Navelim’s Clinton Niasso came close on a couple of occasions but failed to convert. Dicarpale, too, had their moments, creating opportunities from set pieces that went begging. The first half ended goalless, with both teams unable to break the deadlock.
After the change of ends, Navelim stepped up the pressure. In the 31st minute, Ronaldo Pereira produced a moment of brilliance”controlling the ball on his chest before unleashing a powerful volley that flew past the Dicarpale goalkeeper to put his side ahead.
Chasing an equaliser, Dicarpale pushed men forward but were unable to make the most of their chances, as the Navelim defence stood firm. Navelim, meanwhile, looked to hit on the counter, though Dicarpale’s backline managed to prevent further damage.
The match ended 1“0 in favour of Navelim Villagers Union, who now advance to the last eight.
Ronaldo Pereira of Navelim Villagers Union was named Player of the Match, with the award presented by Climax Lawrence, former captain of the Indian football team.
