Dempo Sports Club defeated Sesa Football Academy 2-0 in the Goa Professional League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Monday.
Pedro Gonsalves and Gaurav Vaigankar scored for the Golden Eagles to end Sesa FA’s unbeaten run in the competition. With the three points, Dempo climb to the top with a tally of 16 points from seven games.
In early action, Dempo defender Shallum Pires made an interception after Sesa's Laishram played a pass to M Faheez. At the other end in the 20th minute, Dempo made their first incisive move when Vinay and Velanco combined together to get into the box and the latter fired a shot, which was blocked by Sesa FA keeper Raunak Gaonkar.
Dempo broke the deadlock two minutes later when Pedro Gonsalves headed in a Suraj Hadkonkar corner kick. At the other end, Shridharnath wasted an easy chance to score from a set-piece. In the second half, Dempo had another chance to double their lead when Suraj tried his luck with a powerful shot which was saved by Gauncar, the Sesa custodian. Dempo doubled the lead in the 51st minute from another set-piece, where Suraj sent a perfect flag-kick which was guided in by Gaurav.
Down 0-2, Sesa responded with a threatening move as Vishnu Gosawi sent in an aerial pass in the box to a well-positioned Faheez but Dempo defender Edwin kept his composure in making a vital block. The loose ball fell to Kunal Salgaonkar, but he shot wide. In the dying minutes, Kunal again failed to test the goalkeeper.
