The Aam Aadmi Party has emerged as the single largest party while registering a historic victory in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections on Monday.
The Aam Aadmi Party had entered the Chandigarh civic elections for the first time and won 14 wards where BJP had a stranglehold.
Expressing happiness over this historic victory, AAP National Convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal congratulated all the winning candidates and workers of the party and said that this victory was a sign of change in Punjab. He added that the people of Chandigarh have rejected corruption and misgovernance and chosen AAP’s honest politics.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia tweeted, “People of Chandigarh have reposed faith in the politics and leadership of Kejriwal. A heartfelt thank you to every single voter of Chandigarh. This victory is a sign that if there is an alternative, people want to give a chance to ‘honesty and work-positive politics’”
On December 24, elections were held in 35 wards of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Only the BJP and Congress have held power in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation so far, and the Aam Aadmi Party was contesting elections for the first time.
AAP said party leaders and workers worked tirelessly to ensure victory. On December 19, Kejriwal addressed a public meeting in Chandigarh and urged the people to give AAP’s honest politics a chance.
The people of Chandigarh chose to trust Kejriwal and his honest politics in 14 wards in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections, the party said and added, “People are extremely dissatisfied with the BJP’s corruption, and even brought defeat to its mayor.”
Prior to the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections, the Aam Aadmi Party ran for local body and panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Goa, garnering widespread support.
The Aam Aadmi Party won more than 83 Zilla Panchayat seats, 300 Gram Panchayat seats, and more than 232 Kshetra Panchayat seats in Uttar Pradesh’s Panchayat elections.
Simultaneously, the Aam Aadmi Party won 18 seats in the Surat Municipal Corporation elections in the BJP’s stronghold of Gujarat. Similarly, in Maharashtra’s Gram Panchayat elections, the Aam Aadmi Party won 145 of 300 seats. In the Himachal Pradesh Panchayat elections, the AAP fielded 40 candidates and won a historic victory in 36 seats. Simultaneously, the Aam Aadmi Party won one District Development Council member seat in Jammu and Kashmir and one Zilla Panchayat member seat in Goa.
