Canacona Sports and Cultural Club went down fighting as Cuncolim Union registered a convincing 5–1 victory to book their place in the quarterfinals of the UCT Trophy Inter-Village Football Tournament, organised by United Club of Telaulim and played at the Government Primary School ground, Telaulim, on Friday.
The match was played at a fast pace with both teams displaying attacking football and good skills. Cuncolim Union missed an early chance when Daulat Dessai’s shot went off target. Canacona then took control as Velvino Fernandes opened the scoring, followed by Ronaldo Oliveira who doubled the lead, giving Canacona a 2–0 advantage at the breather.
In the second half, Cuncolim Union created several scoring opportunities through Norain Belki, Daulat Dessai and Tushar Velip, but failed to convert. Canacona struck again through Chaitan Komarpant, while Ronaldo Oliveira added two more goals to complete his hat-trick.
Cuncolim Union managed a consolation goal in injury time through Tushar Gaonkar.
Ronaldo Oliveira was adjudged the Player of the Match for his hat-trick and was awarded by Lovel Carvalho.
