Royal Warriors of Canacona clinch Canacona Media Chasak title

Royal Warriors of Canacona emerged as winners of the first ever Canacona Media Chasak-2024 after defeating Vithoba Warriors in the first edition of the All Goa tennis ball cricket tournament, organised Navi Disha Publications in coordination with Press Club Goa, at SAG ground, Agonda, on Sunday.

Asked to bat first after losing the toss, Vithoba Warriors scored 71/7 in the allotted 8 overs with Vasant Borkar’s knock of 28 runs off 12 balls and skipper Pritam Gaonkar hitting 14 runs off 8 balls after losing the opening pair of Anil Gaonkar 5(3) and Navdeep Gaonkar 11(12) cheaply. Star batsman and Semi-final man-of-the-match Alwino Carvalho was also ousted for 3 scored of 6 balls. For Royal Warriors Harshad Matondkar got 2 wickets , while captain Gaurav Sawant Vishwadeep Shet Dessai, Rajat Komarpant and Babu Chavan got a wicket each.

In reply, Royal Warriors chased the required score to win the match comfortably losing 4 wickets in just 6 overs. Openers Akhil Desai 12(6) and Samarth Gauns 28(10) along with Uday Shet Dessai 7*(7) and Naru Pagi* 12(4) saw their team comfortably to win the match and the winning purse of Rs 1,11,111 and a trophy (Canacona Media Chasak). Each of 4 bowlers (Satish Gaonkar, Jay Mahale, Vikrant Naik and Anil Gaonkar ) used by Vithoba Warriors got one wicket each.

Vithoba Warriors had to be content with a purse of Rs 55,555 and a trophy.

Earlier in the semis, Vithoba Warriors defeated M S Rising by 35 runs. In the other semi-final match Royal Warriors (54/3) did the short work of Mandovi Boys (52/6) whose batsman fumbled to score runs after put in to bat first. Royal warriors won by 7 wickets.

Both the losing semi-finalists were each given cheques of Rs 22,222 and trophies.

Best Batsman: Uday Shet Desai, Man of the series: Uday Shet Desai and Best bowler: Nikhil Desai was given a purse of Rs.5,555 besides a trophy.

The awards and trophies were handed over to the winners and runners-up by Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaonkar and Teacher(Retd)/Ex-CMC Chairperson Rajendra Desai in the presence of ZP (Khola) Shanu Velip and ZP (Poinguinim) Shobhana Velip, CMC Vice Chairperson Narcisco (Nadin) Fernandes, Councillors Simon Rebello, Laxuman Pagui and Pandurang (Dhiraj) Naikgaonkar.
