Scrapyard headache

In 2010, HC asked scrap dealers to relocate scrapyards within two months

Scrapyard headache

Relocating scrapyards is proving to be quite a task.

Around 381 applications received by Director of Industries,Trade and Commerce (DITC), from scrap dealers across Goa, for relocation oftheir scrap yards from residential area to industrial estate. is gathering dustfor the last two years.

Government had initiated action against illegal scrap yardsfollowing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a law student, JatinRamaiya, who had complained about illegal scrap yards operating in Ponda. Allthose illegal scrap yards were demolished later.

However, after demolition of the scrap yards in Ponda, scrapdealers across the State had pleaded before the court seeking assistance forrelocation of their trade from residential areas to industrial estate.

The HC had given two months to the scrap dealers across Goato file an application for relocation of their scrap yards before DITC in theyear 2010.

“DITC has identified land / sites for relocation of thescrap yards. The only worrying factor is whether the scrap dealers are willingto shift or not,” said Managing Director of DITC, Faizi Hashim.

“We are concerned about the matter and asked the IndustriesMinister to intervene in the matter to expedite the entire process,” saidHashim.

DITC had directed both district collectors to identify theland in their jurisdictions for relocation, the DITC officer added.

“We are willing to shift at any time, as and when thegovernment allots space at an industrial estate. The government is yet todisclose the site,” scrap dealers complained.
