Assistant Geologist in Mines Dept commits suicide

Goa Congress files complaint against Parrikar

The Goa Congress on Sunday (Sep 23) filed police complaint againstChief Minister Manohar Parrikar for allegedly abetting suicide of a suspended Minesand Geology department official.

Congress leader Sudip Tamankar lodged the complaint at Pondapolice station claiming that the harassment meted out to assistant geologistDattatray Bhave, along with five other officials who were suspended for theiralleged involvement in illegal mining activity, prompted Bhave to commitsuicide.

The complaint said Parrikar should be interrogated andbooked for his alleged role in the suicide.

Bhave had committed suicide by hanging himself at hisresidence in Ponda town on the morning of September 21.

His family had alleged that Bhave was humiliated, mentallytortured and harassed by the department after the suspension, which forced himto take the extreme step.

A senior police official said they will be studying thecharges levelled in the complaint before proceeding with further action.

Meanwhile, BJP's Goa spokesman Wilfred Mesquita said theCongress was "trying to draw mileage from the suicide incident."

The officer should have faced the inquiry instead of killinghimself, Mesquita said.

Parrikar had asked the local deputy collector to initiate aninquiry in the suicide.
