The Belagavi Traffic Improvement Project (BelTRAC) that was proposed a couple of years ago in order to technically and professionally improve the traffic conditions in the city is expected to be operational soon. The main constituent of the project is to evolve an intelligent transportation system (ITS) comprising wide-ranging technologies for an intelligent traffic management. Speaking to media persons, DCP Crime and Traffic Amarnath Reddy said the work on installation of 12 traffic towers will be complete by end of this week. The ITS comprises real-time traffic information, instant control of traffic signals, variable message signs, information processing, transit signal priority and fire pre-emption.
The city police commissionerate has received an amount of Rs 2 crore from the state government to implement the plan. The entire monitoring system is being installed at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore and is expected to be operational from the third week of April, DCP Reddy said.
