SANGUEM
The Curchorem-Quepem-Sanvordem belt has witnessed a series of drug seizures and arrests over the past few months, pointing to the presence of peddling and supply networks operating in the newly formed Kushavati district.
The pattern emerging over the past year indicates a mix of isolated cases of possession and more organised movement of narcotics through the belt. While large seizures remain relatively infrequent, the steady detection of smaller quantities points to continued demand and circulation at the local level.
In one of the biggest cases reported in recent months, Curchorem Police seized approximately 9.1 kilos of ganja and arrested two persons during a raid carried out in early 2026.
The seizure, made near SAG Sport Complex, is considered among the largest in the locality in recent times and highlighted the movement of bulk quantities through the region. The accused in their late twenties were residents of Quepem, but natives of Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.
Frequent small hauls
Police action, however, has not been limited to major hauls. In several instances through 2025 and early 2026, Curchorem Police registered cases involving smaller quantities of narcotic substances. In one such case, a youth from Assolda was apprehended with around 83 grams of suspected ganja at Xelvona, while in another case, two individuals were arrested in connection with possession of drugs, indicating recurring activity in and around the town.
In neighbouring Quepem, the situation is no different. A notable case involved the arrest of a 22-year-old accused from Amona, from whom approximately 297 grams of ganja, along with cash, was recovered during a raid at Nirmal Nagar.
Sanvordem and adjoining areas have figured prominently in enforcement activity, with police intensifying surveillance based on local inputs and complaints.
Residents in certain pockets have repeatedly raised concerns over alleged open drug consumption and peddling, prompting increased patrolling and targeted raids by law enforcement agencies.
