Against the ropes, but still fighting

He had to give up the sport he loves, because there was a time when he couldn’t afford to pay his fees, despite already representing Goa and winning a bronze medal at the Taekwondo nationals. But Prashant Shinde still fought on.

Against the ropes, but still fighting

Yourmost memorable moment as sportsperson

I was the first person to represent Goa atthe Nationals in Shillong, Meghalaya and defeated the defending champion toadvance to the quarter finals. I was fighting a seven foot guy from Rajasthanbut before the fight could begin, I started vomiting as the water there wascontaminated. Also while fighting, I fractured my ankle. I couldn’t stand upyet I fought all the three rounds. Eventually, I lost but I lost with pride. Itwould have been a shame to give up while representing your state at theNationals. The following year, I got a gold medal at state level. But once Istarted my business, I couldn’t devote much time for taekwondo. Moreover, I washaving issues to pay taekwondo fees. I haven’t answered all examinations in thesport till date.

Yourrole model/inspiration?

During my college days in engineering, myfather used to tell me stories of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in order toimbibe good moral values in me. As my father was a Physical Education teacher,I was always inclined towards sports. He has always been my role model.

Whatkind of movies do you love watching?

Undoubtedly, it has to be action movies. Ilove martial arts.

Whatkind of music do you like listening to?

My father was a very good classical singerand he used to play various classical instruments. Perhaps that’s how Ideveloped my love for Indian classical music.

Yourfavourite cuisine

People eat to live but I live to eat. Idon’t think there’s any restaurant in Goa that I haven’t been to. When I’mtravelling to other countries, I make it a point to try local cuisine.

Themost beautiful part of the world you have travelled to

I have been to Thailand, Malaysia, Dubaiand few other countries. But I’m a true Goan by heart. I love Goa.
