The Canacona Sports Club is focused on providing a platformfor the boys of Canacona in football, cricket, basketball, volleyball. The aimof this club is to provide an avenue for the youth in developing sportingtalent. The club is also seen as the first step towards a possible professionalcareer. The football team participates in inter-village tournaments but hastill date been unable to make a mark either by winning a competition or beatingany of the prominent teams in the state. A couple of players have however movedon to play in the junior teams of Salgaocar and Dempo. Alvito Miranda ispresently playing in the junior team of Dempo and Ryan Dsouza for Salgoacar. Theteam which consists of players from the village meet over the weekend andpractice.  An application has been sentto GCA for affiliation of the cricket team, though at the time of going topress there was no reply for the state cricket association. The cricket teamparticipates in tournaments organized by private cricket clubs. Canacona SportsClub also organises a cricket tournament in the memory of the young Goancricketer Shuban Naik every year which is contested by school teams in thearea.

We usually spend around Rs.25, 000 every month toparticipate in the various inter-village tournaments. We do not have anysponsors which mean we are unable to pay any money to our players. We providethem with kit, transport and a snack. You have to understand that our playerscome from a rural background. We spend our money to ensure these activitiestake place every month. Occasionally we get donations. It is our duty to ensurethat the young boys in the area have an option to develop their skills invarious sporting disciplines.

The club was formed in 2001 by Jabardhan Bhandari,Shailendra Naik and others to help the boys in the area who are talented tomake the most of what they have and have a pathway to come out of poverty.
