Aid to piggery: A welcome step

It is understood that the state government has announced a scheme to  provide financial assistance for the purchase and rearing of exotic and  crossbred pigs and augment pork production in the state. The eligibility  criteria also states that beneficiary must have undergone training in  piggery management. This is a step in the right direction as it will  boost the production of pork products in the state. 

As of now piggery is an unorganized sector. It would be desirable for the pigs to be tested by a veterinary  doctor before being killed. This scheme could also be extended to the  locally bred pigs and not restricted to just exotic and cross bred pigs. There also needs to be some price control. The government could even think  in terms of starting producing pork products at the piggery farm at Curti just like the Goa Meat Complex. Adelmo Fernandes, Vasco

Will suspensions bring about a change in the way Colvale Central Jail is managed? Five jail staff have been suspended on Friday over a ‘bhang’ party on Mahashivratri night in the jail.
