Last week something nice happened -- an exhibition for the visually impaired was thrown open at the National Museum in New Delhi. Replicas of about 22 rare exhibits were specially created for the visually impaired along with an audio guide and Braille labels. For instance a 19-century coin from the Awadh region was recreated with a 23-inch diameter to offer a more detailed experience. This is not the first of its kind, but one must congratulate the museum for working along with Unesco and volunteers from an NGO to create this experience for the visually impaired. Awareness about the needs of disabled persons is growing with government offices being renovated to make them more friendly for people with special needs. The idea is to bring all people into the mainstream and give them equal opportunities wherever necessary. The exhibition titled ‘Anubhav: A Tactile Experience’ is just the beginning of a process that will give the visually impaired a better insight into the past.
