Desecration of religious structures has raised its ugly head once again. Salcete has been struck by a series of such incidents where two crosses at Curtorim and Aquem and the statue of Nandi and Tulsi Vrundavan at Lord Krishna Temple were vandalised by unknown miscreants. A couple of days back, two crosses were found vandalised in Catholic dominated areas of St Jose de Areal and Gudi Paroda.rThis is a deliberate and planned attempt by unscrupulous elements to rake up communal tension. Such acts not only create communal tensions, but also threaten to disrupt the calm in the state. Using Google maps and other technology to trap culprits as proposed is not a practical solution in a state like Goa. Citizens, more specifically in villages, are relying heavily on the nakabandis and police patrols at night. Police should swing into action and begin a probe on a war footing. Night patrolling should be intensified and those found guilty should be dealt with severely. At best the locals can resort to moral policing without taking the law into their own hands. The communal harmony with which Goans lived over the years should not come under a cloud.
