A second prostitution racket has been busted by the Porvorim police; the first occurred just over a week ago. While it’s alarming that online prostitution rackets seem to be thriving in Goa, the police force deserves plaudits for conducting stings, apprehending those involved and also rescuing victims.
Two girls were rescued and a male pimp arrested in Porvorim. The pimp was residing at a hotel in Candolim. Bank accounts have been frozen and vehicles seized. Of course, these are small fish from the big pond but everything works to slow down perpetrators such as these.
That prostitution thrives in Goa is a known fact and the police have been working over the years to curb this. With online sites and social media use getting widespread, it has become far easier for those in the business to proliferate. Netbanking and other apps help in many ways too. This is more than enough reason for the police to start thinking of a cybercrime division by which their work can be simplified. This way, they can not only track the perpetrators online, but also hack into their systems and find ways to initiate stings as well as gather evidence. Criminals are getting smarter and more tech savvy, perhaps it’s time we do too.
