Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is thinking out loud. He is thinking a lot about adding an edit button which would allow users to make changes in their tweets. Twitter has 317 million active users per month and there has been a demand from them for an edit button. Users want the button to correct spelling and grammar and others want it to change tweets which suddenly go viral in a very bad way. So, what Dorsey is saying, is, “we are thinking about it a lot”. This is like Mark Zuckerberg thinking about putting a ‘dislike’ button on Facebook. What makes Twitter sparkle is spontaneity. Take that away and tweets might end up being well edited for spelling, grammar and context, but boring. Besides, there are issues in allowing users to edit tweets. For instance, what happens if a tweet goes viral and people start building a debate around it and then the sender decides to edit it? Secondly, allowing changes on a tweet that has gone half way around the world and to a million people calls for some ingenious code writing. The rule of thumb is if you correct grammar and spelling before you tweet you won’t have a problem. And in any case, the delete button is still there for the ones that slip through the mind's wall of inhibition.
