Historic distortion

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems to have lost it. No one yet knows how he came to the conclusion that the idea of exterminating Jews was put into Hitler's head by the then-Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini, but hours before his visit to Germany he made the statement, which is now being torn apart by historians from Israel. Netanyahu said that until al-Husseini's meeting with Hitler in 1941 the German leader wanted to expel the Jews not exterminate them. Reacting to the Israeli Prime Minister, the German government issued a statement that the Holocaust was Germany's responsibility and there was no need for another view on it. A professor of the Tel Aviv University and chief historian of Israel's Holocaust memorial museum went on record to say that what the prime minister had stated was not true. Hitler's ideology and hatred for the Jews was established long before his meeting with al-Husseini and Netanyahu's statement is a grand distortion of the facts. The Mufti's meeting was aimed at gaining Germany's support for radical Islam and it failed. The Mufti was strongly anti-Semitic and it was easy for Netanyahu to extrapolate his views with the Holocaust, except that there appears to be non documentary proof to support this theory. The Israeli right-wing will lap up the Prime Minister's assertion, but in the end the facts will prevail.

Curse them or embrace them, the truth is we have no choice but to depend on politicians to bring about a political consensus on the subject. This job cannot be done by planners, activists or NGOs. It's a job for the politicians and should they fail us we…
