Two days ago, North Korea tested three missiles that landed just off Japan, in the ocean. This was a warning shot, one that has been condemned by the UN, the US, South Korea and many other countries, including China. The UN Security Council has now even threatened further measures if the country refuses to pay heed and continues testing.
North Korea is hell-bent on provoking its neighbours, as well as the US and the UN. Kim Jong-un seems to love this show of force, but what he is doing effectively is dig a deeper hole for himself and his country. In January, the nuclear tests by North Korea shocked many, who called for tighter sanctions. Now, with these recent tests it seems that those sanctions cannot be that far away. Incidentally, this occurred during a G20 meeting in China.
South Korea has already announced plans to counter these tests with American anti-missile technology. And the UNSC and other countries will now band together to impose more sanctions. Within North Korea, the people are unaware of the negative impact of these actions. The top brass in the country may be showboating and intimidating people, and although sanctions are necessary, something should be done to counteract Kim Jong-un’s influence and power in the country.
