The world’s largest uncut diamond failed to sell at an auction in London. Perhaps, the auctioneer was not able to get the super-rich to part with $ 71 million, which is a large amount of cash. One could buy an island with that kind of money. An uncut diamond is not very attractive and the total internal reflection that makes diamonds sparkle in light is
enhanced by cutting. The diamond was discovered in 2015 by the Lucara Diamond
Corp, which means it lacks a story and mystery which could kick up the price. In contrast, the Kohinoor diamond which is one-tenth the size of the diamond on sale, is priceless and the most coveted possession of the Queen of England, apart from the Corgi dogs which have always been her favourite. It’s difficult to say where Prince Charles would fit in the list of favourite things, but some say he would definitely be after the Corgis.
That apart, the record for the biggest diamond in the world is
held by the Cullinan Diamond which was cut into nine diamonds
for the British crown jewels. The Cullinan I is on the
Queen’s sceptre and Cullinan II is lodged in the crown. Being a
queen is not without its advantages, after all.
