In the ongoing Vijay Mercant Trophy U-16 (South Zone) played at Shimoga across three venues, Goa picked up their first points in their third round fixture against Tamil Nadu by virtue of their first innings lead at KSCA, Shimoga on Monday.
On winning the toss and electing to bat first, Tamil Nadu piled up 357 in 97 overs with Vignesh Iyer (80), and R S Mokit Hariharan being the main run-getters. For Goa, Ruthvik Naik with 2 for 95 in 33 overs and Manchit Naik with 2 for 58 in 25 overs did the most of the damage.
In reply, Goa amassed 377 for 7 (184 overs) with one-down keeper-batsman Kaushal Singh Gusain 113 (497b) and captain and lower middle-order batsman Digesh Raikar unbeaten 115 (289b) notching centuries.
With the vital first innings 20-run lead at the end of the three-dayer, Goa secured three points while Tamil Nadu picked a lone point from the game. Goa had earlier lost to Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh in their first two matches. They now face Kerala from December 14-16 at JNNC Ground, Shimoga.
