Goa police’s drive against visa overstays has resulted in the deportation of 76 foreign nationals so far this year, with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO, Goa police) continuing to track immigration violations. The latest cases include a Bangladeshi woman who attracted the authorities’ attention after applying for an Indian passport.
Officials told The Goan that the woman, who holds a Bangladeshi passport and claimed to have married an Indian national, came under the scanner during passport verification by the Margao CID Centre’s Special Branch.
“She had overstayed her visa and had not disclosed her family details during the verification process. FRRO has initiated deportation proceedings against her,” the official said.
In another case, the FRRO traced a Kenyan woman in Siolim for overstaying her visa and lodged her at the detention centre pending deportation.
In the last two days, two deportations were reported. Among them was that of a Russian national who had entered Goa on a tourist visa but remained in the State/India beyond the permitted period. “He also faced a Motor Vehicles Act case, in which the court acquitted him. The court however convicted him in the visa overstay case after which he was deported on Saturday,” the official said.
An Australian national who overstayed his visa was the second foreign national to be deported following court proceedings.
