Accident free roads this peak season
The month of December till mid-January is that time of the year when hordes of tourists, both domestic and foreign visit Goa. It is time for fun and frolic during the festive season. It is that time of the year when nightlife is at its peak. However it is also the time of the year when more road accidents occur in the state. In the past few days several road accidents, some of them fatal, have taken place. There are various reasons for the increase in the road accidents taking place during this period. However the prime reasons are the increase in the number of vehicles on the roads, speeding, and more importantly drunken driving. The traffic police need to be on their toes during the festive season in order to instill discipline among road users specially, among tourists who hire two wheelers and zoom on the roads as if there is no tomorrow. Since drunken driving is normally indulged in during the nights, the cops should check on those driving during late nights as to see whether they have consumed alcohol beyond the permissible limits. It is essential to keep our roads free from accidents during the festive season.

Liberate ourselves
The booking of two youth who attempted to disrupt the Liberation Day proceedings, by trying to create awareness for special status, throws light on the way Liberation Day is viewed by many in Goa. There are those who call it Invasion Day, no doubt their view is that Goa would have better off with Portugal or as a sovereign nation. But, the fact is that we must now move beyond this argument and look to improving our state, irrespective of who we are joined at the hip to. Today, India is in a far better state economically, than Portugal. Yes, they have cleaner roads and better ethics in most departments. We can get there here. Forget the rest of India, let’s make Goa clean. But for that we need to come together, irrespective of political alliances, religion, caste and other encumbrances.
Let’s do away with the caste system, stop opposing every single piece of development or industry that comes up and let’s not turn into rabid dogs on social media by listening to those who have a single point agenda and that is to further their own ideas and not a collective one. Goa can be liberated from these evils, even if we now have no choice as to what country we are part of.

Spend for quality
The Michael Learns to Rock show was amazing. It was great to hear hits that take you back to your youth. Goa needs more of these concerts to happen, but the sad part is that without a paying audience, there’s only so much one can do. The amount of people calling up other friends and posting on facebook, asking for free tickets and passes was innumerable. I know of many friends who were dying to come for the show but didn’t want to pay Rs 1250 to see a big band like this live. What is Rs 1250 today? There are those who found the Rs 200 price for ISL tickets too much and complained that it was expensive? If this is the attitude, then how are we supposed to experience good quality music, entertainment and sport?
