The organisers of the job fair held at Verna IDC recently have claimed that the event was a huge success, but the ground reality painted a whole different situation. People attending the fair had to face a lot of hardship. Getting information was a task in itself. There was only one help desk, and nobody was present to help the visitors. And with only one registration counter, it made matters worse. There were many aspirants who had to turn back because they were not eligible. It was a complete waste of time and money for these people who had come from different parts of the State. The organisers should have published the names of the companies and the vacancies available in the newspapers at least one day prior to the fair so that only those who were eligible would have attended. They could have also provided details online. Such job fairs should be held regularly, but the organisers should ensure that they don't repeat the same mistakes in future.

The recent fracas at a tiatr at Ravindra Bhavan when the wife of a tiatrist going on stage and slapping another tiatrist in the middle of a song sequence in full public view has to be condemned in the strongest possible terms. This is a cheap publicity stunt which has no place in a civilised society and has to be treated with the contempt it deserves. Tiatr is a form of entertainment for Goans for ages and disgraceful acts of verbally chopping each other on stage is a recipe for ugly confrontations. If the tiatrist has problems it is best to sort it out among themselves off stage and not deprive the paying public of their entertainment which they revel in. Recently, there was another similar incident at Vasco. If such incidents keep on happening it will be playing into the hands of the tiatr opponents, and the tiart will die a slow death with tiatrists solely responsible for this. Hope better sense prevails and Goans are not deprived of this form of entertainment they flock to see in thousands.

Scrabble is one game which goes a long way in improving one’s word power. It is an exciting mind sport which is probably not widely played as compared to the game of chess which also is a mind sport. Educational institutions should encourage their students to play scrabble during the interval or when there is an off period. This will ensure that they improve their English vocabulary. Schools and colleges should also organize inter-class scrabble competitions, while social clubs could also organize inter-school and inter-college similar contests. We have a few Goans who has brought laurels to the state on the national level by winning several competitions. Incidentally, the game of scrabble could be tried out for the Konkani language in Romi script as well. A game of scrabble in Konkani will instill a love for the mother tongue among the youth and also improve their Konkani vocabulary. A lot is being done to promote the love for the mother tongue Konkani by Konkani academy and Konkani lovers. These include tiatrists, Konkani book writers, poets and singers. A competition of scrabble in Konkani language on the same scrabble board used for the English language will promote the mother tongue and improve the vocabulary of Konkani lovers among the youth many of whom feel shy to speak in the mother tongue.
