Out of the 17 Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in Goa, the Panaji ITI has been selected under the ‘upgradation of existing Government ITIs into Model ITIs’, which is a government of India scheme that could change the outlook of the institute and set it up to provide skills that are quite up to date with the current demand across Goa.
The ITIs provide students with training in computer operations, mechanics, welders, plumbers, electricians, as well as in food production, hospitality management and more. They currently provide training in 12 trades but with the upgradation to a Model ITI, other skillsets in the IT sector, the ITES (IT enabled services), paramedics and other services will become part of the curriculum.
These institutes are the backbone, of sorts, of the industrial sector in Goa. Students that pass out of the 17 ITIs in Goa join various industries, especially Goa Shipyard which is planning to source students from these institutes once operations at the shipyard get scaled up. Every year, a few hundred students pass out and become part of the Goan workforce.
Now this upgradation would mean that there will be students ready for more technology savvy jobs, not just at the Goa Shipyard but also in the different industries across the state. If the IT park plans see the light of day, there will be a trained workforce, ready for certain jobs.
